Not all water is created equal. Clean, gray, black: the category of water in your home decides how dangerous it is, what can be saved, how long the job takes and what it costs. Learn the three categories and every restoration conversation gets easier.

(302) 400-8531Category 1: Clean Water
From sanitary sources: supply line breaks, sink overflows without contaminants and appliance malfunctions from a clean supply. Initially safe. Critical: Category 1 degrades to Category 2 within 24 to 48 hours as water contacts building materials and contaminants.
Category 2: Gray Water
Significant contamination that could cause discomfort or illness. Typical sources: dishwasher and washing machine overflow, sump pump failure water, toilet overflow with urine but no feces and hydrostatic groundwater seepage.
Category 3: Black Water
Grossly contaminated: pathogenic, toxigenic and hazardous. Sources: sewage backup, toilet overflow with feces, all exterior flooding regardless of appearance and any Category 1 or 2 water that has been stagnant for 48 hours or more.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Category 1 | Category 2 | Category 3 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common name | Clean water | Gray water | Black water |
| Example sources | Supply line, sink overflow | Washer overflow, sump failure | Sewage, river flood |
| Health risk | Low initially | Moderate | High |
| PPE | Basic | Enhanced | Full |
| Porous materials | Often salvageable | Case by case | Removed |
| Treatment | Dry and clean | Antimicrobial and dry | Biocide, HEPA, removal, dry |
| Relative cost | Lowest | Moderate | Highest |
Why This Matters
Category 3 requires full PPE, containment, removal of all porous materials, biocide treatment and HEPA air scrubbing. Category 1 does not. The cost difference can be several times higher for Category 3 jobs.
How Categories Can Change
Time and contact change water. Category 1 left standing, or flowing through dirty areas, can become Category 2 or Category 3. That is why fast response is essential and why classification should be done on site.
Damage Classes (Quick Reference)
| Class | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Class 1 | Small area, low-porosity materials, minimal absorption |
| Class 2 | Whole room, carpet and cushion, wicking up walls |
| Class 3 | Water from overhead, saturating walls, ceilings and floors |
| Class 4 | Deeply bound water in dense materials like hardwood, plaster and stone |

Why is flood water always Category 3?
Because it has been in contact with soil, sewage, chemicals and other contaminants outdoors.
How long before clean water becomes gray?
Category 1 water can degrade to Category 2 within 24 to 48 hours.
Does insurance treat categories differently?
Coverage depends on cause, not category, but category affects scope and cost.
